How Much Can You Earn Trading Forex in South Africa?

Nobody can tell you what you will earn from forex, because returns are not fixed and losses are common.

There is no standard forex income, only outcomes you calculate yourself

Any figure quoted as a typical monthly forex income is guesswork. Your result depends on your starting capital, the size of each position, how often you trade, and how the market moves while you hold. Two traders with identical accounts can finish the month in opposite directions.

What you can do is work out the arithmetic before you commit money. A profit calculator takes your entry price, exit price, position size and the ZAR conversion, then shows the gross result. Subtract whatever your broker charges to open and close the trade, and you have your net figure. The broker's fee schedule sits on its funding or pricing page, not in a marketing email.

This is why the honest answer to how much you can earn is another question: how much are you willing to lose on a single trade, and does your account survive a run of them?

Undated figures are opinions in disguise. What we could not trace back to a source was dropped rather than guessed at.

Day trading and swing trading differ in cost and screen time, not in guaranteed profit

Day trading means opening and closing positions within one session, often several times. Swing trading means holding for days or longer, aiming to capture a larger move. Neither method is more profitable by design. More trades means more fees and more decisions; fewer trades means each one carries more weight in your results.

South African session times shape which approach suits your day. Sydney runs 23:00 to 08:00 SAST, Tokyo 02:00 to 11:00 SAST, London 10:00 to 19:00 SAST, and New York 14:00 to 23:00 SAST. The London and New York overlap, 14:00 to 19:00 SAST, is when activity is typically heaviest. If you work office hours, swing trading fits around your job better than staring at a screen after midnight.

Costs bite harder the more often you trade. A strategy that looks profitable on a calculator can turn negative once the spread and commission are applied to every entry and exit.

A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchersCheck the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers.

None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at fsca.co.za.

Check the FSCA register before you trust any return figure

Brokers offering leveraged forex to South African residents need an FSCA ODP licence. You can verify a firm by looking up its FSP number on the FSCA list of authorised financial services providers at fsca.co.za. If a broker cannot point you to a verifiable FSP number, treat any advertised return as meaningless.

A licence does not make trading profitable, and it does not protect you from market losses. It tells you the firm has met a regulatory threshold to operate here. That distinction matters when a platform promises easy earnings.

Deposits and withdrawals usually move by EFT, with instant EFT, Ozow, Capitec Pay, card and bank transfer also common. Check the broker's own funding page for the methods it supports, the time each takes, and any charges it applies. Your bank or EFT app will show what leaves your account.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search by the registered company in the footer rather than the name on the homepage.

Learning the mechanics matters more than chasing a profit target

If you are learning forex trading, start with position sizing, risk per trade, and how to read a profit calculator. These are unglamorous skills, but they decide whether a bad week is survivable. Practise on a demo account until the arithmetic is automatic.

Ignore lists of the richest forex traders in South Africa as a guide to your own prospects. Someone else's balance tells you nothing about your capital, your costs or your discipline. The same applies to any app marketed as the best way to earn money here; an app is a tool, not a return.

Set a rule for how much of your account you risk on one trade, and record every result in ZAR. After a few months you will have your own data, which is worth more than any projection.

The paperwork, and what each piece proves

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address - municipal bill or bank statement; requirements differ per firm. The firm's own sign-up page is the list that counts.

Why the funding method changes what your withdrawal actually proves

A profit shown inside a trading platform is a screen number, not money in your account. The test is whether the same amount arrives back through the rail you used to fund, so the withdrawal path matters as much as the trading result. Read the broker's own funding page before depositing, not after.

South African traders commonly fund by EFT, instant EFT, Ozow, Capitec Pay, card or bank transfer. Each rail has its own confirmation timing, so a deposit can sit pending while the platform shows a balance. Treat any figure you cannot withdraw as provisional until the rail has cleared in both directions.

The failure mode is simple. A trader funds quickly, trades, sees a gain, then discovers the withdrawal route is slower or requires steps never mentioned at sign-up. Confirm the withdrawal process first, in writing, then size activity around it. That order of operations protects the capital you already have.

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Verify it twice, once in the app and once on the funding page, and never withdraw to an account that did not fund you.

The rand conversion you see is not the rand you keep

Many platforms display profit in a base currency, often the US dollar, while South African readers think in rand. The conversion applied at deposit, at trade close, and at withdrawal can differ, because each step happens at a different moment. That gap is a real cost, not an accounting detail.

Ask the broker which rate source is used for conversion and when it is applied. If the answer is vague, treat every displayed rand figure as approximate. The FSCA register tells you whether a provider is authorised, but it does not set the conversion rate a firm applies to your account.

The practical consequence is that a flat trading result can still produce a loss in rand terms, or the reverse. Before comparing two months, record the rate applied on each funding and withdrawal event. Without that record, month-on-month comparisons are guesswork dressed as analysis.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. That spread between the market rate and the broker's own is a cost worth counting.

Withdrawal timing is a risk you carry before you trade

Money inside a trading account is exposed to the firm's processes, not only to the market. Withdrawal requests can require identity verification, bank confirmation, or manual review. Each step adds days during which the funds are neither tradable nor spendable. Plan for that window rather than discovering it under pressure.

South African bank rails settle on their own schedules, and public holidays affect them. A request submitted late on a Friday may only move the following week. This is not a scandal; it is how payment systems work. The mistake is treating the platform balance as instantly available cash.

Keep a separate emergency fund outside the trading account so a slow withdrawal never forces a bad decision. If you must sell a position early to raise cash, you have let settlement timing dictate your trading. The buffer is boring and it is the single most useful protection available.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. App stores list software. Registers list permissions - and that is the one that matters.

Comparing brokers on returns hides the costs that decide your outcome

Return figures quoted in advertising rarely state the cost structure behind them. Two traders can take identical positions and end with different results because of spreads, financing charges and conversion margins. None of those are visible in a headline percentage. Ask for the actual schedule in writing.

The FSCA list of authorised financial services providers at fsca.co.za confirms whether a firm may operate, not whether its pricing suits you. Authorisation and affordability are separate questions. A provider can be fully authorised and still be expensive for your style of trading.

Build your own comparison from the broker's published fee schedule, then check it against your own statements after a month of activity. Where the two disagree, trust your statements. Advertising describes an average customer who may not resemble you at all.

A written record of your own results is the only figure that matters

No guide, forum or advertisement can tell you what you will make. Only your own closed trades, funding events and withdrawals produce a number specific to you. That record is also the evidence you would need if a dispute arises with a provider later. Keep it from day one.

Record each deposit, withdrawal, conversion rate and closed position with the date. This is not bureaucracy; it is how you separate a genuine edge from a lucky month. South African readers dealing with a provider across timezones benefit from a timestamped trail in SAST.

If a firm cannot or will not explain a charge on your statement, that is a signal worth acting on. Raise it in writing and keep the reply. Consumer protection works best when the consumer holds the paperwork, and the FSCA register is the starting point for checking who you are dealing with.
