Prop Firm Evaluations and Funded Accounts for South African Traders

A prop firm evaluation is a test you pay to take; pass it and the firm may give you a funded account.

What a Prop Firm Evaluation Actually Is

A prop firm evaluation is a paid assessment run by a proprietary trading company. You trade a simulated account against rules the firm sets, and if you meet those rules the firm may offer you a funded account with its own capital. The evaluation fee is your cost of entry, and it is usually lost whether you pass or fail.

The rules matter more than the trading. Firms typically cap daily loss, total drawdown and the time you have to hit a target, and many restrict news trading, holding over weekends or trading certain instruments. Read the rulebook before you pay, because a single breach can end an evaluation even when the account is in profit.

South African traders should treat the fee as risk capital. There is no guarantee of a funded account, no guarantee of a payout, and no local compensation scheme standing behind a prop firm if it stops paying.

Where the FSCA Fits, and Where It Does Not

The Financial Sector Conduct Authority regulates financial services providers in South Africa, and its public register at fsca.co.za lists authorised FSPs. Brokers that offer leveraged forex to South African residents need an FSCA ODP licence, so check the FSP number on that register before you fund anything.

Most prop firms are not brokers and do not hold client funds in the way a licensed broker does. That means the FSCA register may show nothing for the firm you are evaluating, and that absence is not proof of fraud, but it does mean you have no local regulatory recourse if a payout is refused.

Ask the firm directly which entity you are contracting with, where it is registered, and how disputes are handled. If the answers are vague, that is your answer.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search by the registered company in the footer rather than the name on the homepage.

Paying From South Africa and Timing Your Sessions

Evaluation fees and any profit splits are usually settled by EFT or bank transfer, and many firms also accept instant EFT, Ozow, Capitec Pay or card. Check the firm's funding page for the exact methods and the currency you are charged in, because a ZAR debit can differ from the headline USD price once conversion is applied.

South Africa runs on SAST, UTC+2, which sits comfortably between the major sessions. Sydney trades from 23:00 to 08:00 SAST, Tokyo from 02:00 to 11:00, London from 10:00 to 19:00 and New York from 14:00 to 23:00.

The London and New York overlap, 14:00 to 19:00 SAST, is the busiest window of the local day and the one most evaluation rules are written around. If you have a day job, plan your screen time around that window rather than forcing trades at 03:00.

Hours are shown for the clocks in force today: London is on GMT until 28 March, New York is on EDT until 1 November. South Africa does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.

How to Compare Firms Without Relying on a Top Ten List

Search results for the best prop firms are mostly affiliate pages, and rankings shift with commission rates rather than with how firms treat traders. Build your own shortlist instead, starting with the rulebook, the payout terms and the drawdown calculation.

Check how drawdown is measured, whether it is static or trailing, whether profits count toward it, and how long a payout takes once requested. Then check the payment methods you actually use in South Africa and the currency the account is denominated in.

Finally, start with the smallest evaluation the firm offers and treat the first payout as the real test. A firm that pays a small withdrawal on time tells you more than any ranking.

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Verify it twice, once in the app and once on the funding page, and never withdraw to an account that did not fund you.

The Evaluation Fee Is Not the Whole Cost of a Challenge

Traders compare headline evaluation prices and stop there. The fee is only the entry ticket. What matters is what happens after you pass, and whether the firm charges again to activate a funded account, reset a breached one, or keep the account live. Read the firm's own funding page and fee schedule before paying anything.

A second cost is time. An evaluation that takes weeks to review, or that only pays out on a slow cycle, ties up your capital and attention longer than the fee suggests. Ask how long verification takes and when the first payout can be requested. Those answers sit in the firm's terms, not in a review site's summary.

A third is the opportunity cost of a reset. Many traders breach on a rule they did not read, pay again, and repeat the same mistake. Before buying a second attempt, identify which specific rule broke the account. If you cannot name it, the reset buys nothing but another lesson at full price.

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address - municipal bill or bank statement; requirements differ per firm. The firm's own sign-up page is the list that counts.

Paying by EFT Means Your Bank Statement Is Your Receipt

Card payments are convenient but easy to dispute and easy to forget. EFT and instant EFT, including Ozow and Capitec Pay, leave a clear reference on your statement. That reference is what you use if a firm later claims it never received the fee, or if you need to prove the date a challenge began for a time-limited rule.

Save the confirmation before you close the app. Screenshot the payment reference, the amount, and the date, and store it somewhere you will still have it months later. Email is fine. A folder on your phone is not, because phones get replaced and apps get cleared.

If a firm only accepts card or cryptocurrency and cannot issue a proper invoice, treat that as a signal about how it will handle your payout request. The payment method a firm accepts is part of its operational profile, and it is visible before you commit any money.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. That spread between the market rate and the broker's own is a cost worth counting.

A Funded Account Is a Contract, Not a Promotion

Passing an evaluation changes your legal position. You move from being a customer buying a test to being a counterparty under a contract that governs payouts, profit splits, and termination. The rules that applied during the challenge are not automatically the rules that apply afterwards. Read the funded agreement as a separate document.

The most common misreading is assuming that a funded account gives you ownership of the capital. It does not. You trade the firm's capital under its conditions, and the firm can end the arrangement according to those conditions. Whether it does so fairly is a matter of the contract and, where applicable, the firm's regulatory status.

Keep every version of the terms you agreed to. Firms update documents, and disputes are decided on the version in force when the account was opened. A dated copy of the terms, saved at sign-up, is the single most useful record a funded trader can hold.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. App stores list software. Registers list permissions - and that is the one that matters.

Check the FSCA List Before You Check the Payout Speed

The FSCA publishes a list of authorised financial services providers at fsca.co.za. That list is the starting point, not the finish line. A firm may appear on it for one activity and not another, or operate through an offshore entity that is not on it at all. Search the exact legal name, not the brand name.

If a firm is not on the list, that does not automatically make it fraudulent, but it does mean South African recourse is limited. Complaints routes, ombud schemes, and enforcement all depend on the entity being within the FSCA's reach. A firm outside that reach is a firm you deal with at your own risk.

Do not accept a screenshot of a licence as proof. Open fsca.co.za yourself, in your own browser, and confirm the entry. The check takes a few minutes and is the cheapest piece of due diligence available to a South African trader before sending any money abroad.

Two Accounts, One Trader: Why Correlation Breaches Happen

Many firms prohibit holding opposing positions across accounts, or across the same instrument on two evaluations. Traders who run a personal account alongside a challenge often breach this without noticing. The rule exists because the firm sees the combined exposure as one risk, not two separate decisions.

The failure mode is quiet. You open a long on one platform and a short on another, intending to hedge, and the firm flags it as a prohibited strategy. The breach is recorded, the account is closed, and the fee is gone. Nothing in the platform warns you at the moment you place the second trade.

Before running multiple accounts, map which instruments overlap and which direction each position faces. If the firm's rules restrict net exposure, treat every account you hold with that firm as a single book. The order of operations is simple: read the restriction, then decide whether a second account is worth the constraint.
